In the Uncertain 2026, Why More Mainland Families Choose Hong Kong Savings Insurance

HK Insurance Academy · Certainty Assets in an Uncertain Age

1. Why do insurance assets stay steadier when the storm hits?

In 1929, the US stock market crashed and the Great Depression swept the globe. That year's data showed a thought-provoking phenomenon: massive capital fled stocks, bonds, and banks, flowing toward two directions — savings institutions and insurance companies. Life insurance wasn't well developed then, but the capital flowing into insurance already rivaled savings institutions.

In 2008, the subprime crisis erupted; hundreds of banks failed, and the US government and Fed strained to rescue the market. Yet since 1994, few insurers have needed government intervention to protect policyholders. Financial institutions can fail, but policies — especially long-term savings policies — have a "survival rate" in financial crises far exceeding bank deposits.

This isn't luck. Insurers' asset-allocation logic is completely different from banks'. Banks borrow short to lend long, using depositors' short-term deposits for long-term loans; a run means a liquidity crisis. An insurer's liability side is long-term premiums, the asset side a globally diversified investment portfolio — assets and liabilities matched in time. This structure makes it naturally more storm-resistant than banks.

While everyone stares at yields, the truly smart ask — can this asset survive the next winter?

2. How do Hong Kong and mainland insurance differ at the core?

This is the most-asked question. The answer isn't "which is better," but they live in two different financial systems.

Mainland insurers, constrained by capital controls, invest mainly domestically — government bonds, deposits, domestic equities and bonds. And mainland long-term life pricing rates are capped at 3% by regulation; in a rate-down cycle, insurers' own investment returns keep falling. The yield you get is naturally capped by one market's ceiling.

Hong Kong, as a free port, lets insurers invest globally. The Hong Kong insurance industry's asset pool isn't limited to Hong Kong, nor to Asia — it's global. This means Hong Kong savings insurance's long-term annualized return can reach 7%+ — note this number isn't magic, but the reasonable result of a global investment portfolio. Over the past two-plus decades, Hong Kong's top insurers' dividend fulfillment ratios have stayed around 100%.

Another core difference is currency. Mainland policies are RMB-denominated; RMB depreciation directly erodes purchasing power. But Hong Kong savings insurance supports holding and switching among USD, HKD, RMB, and more. One policy can hold different currencies simultaneously — which, in asset-allocation terms, equals a built-in FX-hedge function.

3. The five core advantages of Hong Kong savings insurance — which is easiest to overlook?

First, certainty of long-term returns. Hong Kong savings-dividend policies' guaranteed return is low — usually under 1%. But with dividends, the long-term IRR is around 7%. Some ask: dividends aren't guaranteed, why believe them? The answer is history. Hong Kong's large insurers' actual dividends over the past two-plus decades deviated very little from demonstrated returns. This isn't sentiment; it's data.

Second, privacy protection. Hong Kong runs a common-law system with extremely strong protection of personal property privacy. Policy information doesn't enter the mainland's credit or tax systems. For those needing to isolate asset information, this value far exceeds a few points of return.

Third, flexible inheritance functions. Hong Kong policies support policy split, unlimited insured changes, and contingent-owner designation. This means you can split a large policy into several, allocated at different ratios to different children; or smoothly transition policy rights to the next generation after the insured's death — bypassing probate, generating no inheritance dispute.

Fourth, risk isolation. Policy assets are independent of the policyholder's other property. Legally, they don't participate in debt repayment, nor are they affected by marital-property division. Hong Kong policies achieve this because they're offshore assets under Hong Kong-law jurisdiction.

Fifth, and the most underestimated: premium rebates and prepayment discounts. Hong Kong insurers usually offer first-year premium discounts, subsequent-year premium rebates, and high guaranteed interest on prepaid premiums (currently around 5% at major banks). Factored in, the actual outlay is well below the surface number.

4. Can savings insurance really "cross bull and bear"?

In 2025, mainland visitors' new policies in Hong Kong accounted for 27% of the entire Hong Kong market. Among them, savings-dividend insurance was the overwhelming first choice.

This isn't "blind following." Against the backdrop of deposit rates falling from 3% to 1.5%, near-disappearance of large certificates of deposit, and dried-up property liquidity, mainland families' core dilemma is: they can't find a long-term asset that both preserves purchasing power and needs no daily attention.

Hong Kong savings insurance precisely fills that gap. It's not for short-term betting, but for anchoring long-term purchasing power. Its philosophy is simple: put money into a globally invested pool, let a professional asset manager run it, set a multi-year compounding cycle, then free your attention from daily ups and downs.

No one can predict tomorrow's market. But history repeatedly proves one thing: asset-allocation strategies that live long, endure, and avoid fussing ultimately win. Hong Kong savings insurance represents not the highest return, but the most reliable "certainty" — in an uncertain world, certainty itself is a scarce asset.

Hong Kong's insurance industry holds total assets of USD 4.5 trillion, more developed than even Hong Kong's banking — this isn't a coincidence.
