09 The RMB Exchange Rate, Fully Explained: Why Assets You Thought Were Stable May Just Be 'Shrinking'

Guardian's Awakening · Exchange-Rate Truth

Some feel, as long as the RMB sits there undiminished, it's safe. But in the exchange-rate game, the number didn't move, yet purchasing power may have quietly shrunk by half.

Twenty years in finance, I've seen too many clients whose understanding of "wealth" still stops at nominal value.

They open the banking app daily, see that string of numbers unchanged, even a few cents more in interest, and feel secure.

Precisely this security hides the biggest risk. The exchange rate is wealth's invisible butcher knife.

⚖️ 1. The Mundell Triangle: the inescapable impossible trinity

In international finance there's a famous impossible trinity: a country cannot simultaneously hold capital free flow, monetary-policy independence, and exchange-rate stability.

China chose some combination of the first two. The price: to preserve monetary sovereignty and some exchange-rate management, it must strictly physically isolate capital flows.

This wall — who does it most favor? State debt, and large enterprises.

Who does it most disfavor? Every individual holder whose money is locked in the closed pool.

When global dollars enter a rate-hike cycle and the spread widens, because of the wall, capital can't get out to chase high yields. It can only watch the pool's water silently drained by exchange depreciation and inflation. This is the most blunt face of the "banality of evil" at the exchange-rate level.

2. The essence of exchange rate: a contest of who's-less-bad

People often ask me: will the rate rise or fall?

Actually the exchange rate is never absolute. It's a contest of who's-less-bad. The essence of currency is an IOU; the exchange rate is the swap ratio between different countries' IOUs.

When a person's assets are all settled in a single currency, it's staking the family's next few decades entirely on that one country's credit backing and economic cycle.

If that country chooses to over-issue currency to dissolve debt, the exchange rate is that floodgate. Once global capital seeks safe haven, local-currency assets are the first to be abandoned.

So I insist on reading firsthand foreign-media intel daily. When Wall Street's capital-flow map shows funds exiting emerging markets, flooding into USD, some are still hesitating over the thin interest of domestic wealth products — that's betting a lifetime's accumulation against a high-probability macro downturn.

3. Nominal wealth vs real purchasing power: the covered massacre

Remember a piercing equation: wealth equals bank deposits, times the exchange-rate coefficient, times the global-inflation correction.

Over the past few years, even if local-currency assets nominally grew 10%, the local currency depreciated 10% against USD, plus global energy and food — those hard currencies — rose in price, so real wealth actually contracted.

What high-net-worth crowds want was never "more paper," but the ability to mobilize global resources.

If ten million today can only buy a shabby old domestic flat, while five years ago it could buy an overseas estate — this wealth shrinkage is an indisputable fact. This shrinkage isn't expressed through losses, but through "the raising of thresholds."

💡 4. Hong Kong: shift the "anchor" onto the USD

Why do I always push clients toward Hong Kong allocation?

Because it exploits Hong Kong's institutional premium. Hong Kong's linked exchange-rate system ties the HKD tightly to the USD.

The moment Hong Kong allocation is done, the asset's anchor changes:

  • From soft currency to hard currency. No longer drifting with the tide, but pegged to the world's strongest credit anchor.
  • From walled-in capital to offshore capital. Gaining an entry ticket to globally allocate quality assets and hedge risk.

This is institutional arbitrage: through Hong Kong's window, before risk fully penetrates, migrate wealth from a single-credit system into a globalized-credit system.

Exchange depreciation never falls linearly, bit by bit. It often arrives with some macro narrative's sudden turn, then a cliff-edge drop.

Twenty years in finance taught me: in the wealth-defense war, the forewarned harvest the cognition premium, the laggards pay the exit tax.

Now the wall grows ever higher, external certainty ever scarcer; the window for people to complete the "jump ship" via Hong Kong allocation is silently shrinking. Guarding wealth takes professionalism, and even more, decisiveness.

Next, discuss Hong Kong finance's "pillar of the sea": the linked exchange-rate system. Why are Hong Kong's USD assets the ultimate stabilizer for mainland wealth?
