Why do we need a "trust intermediary"?

In September 2008, Lehman Brothers collapsed and the global financial system began to cascade-fail. Banks froze accounts, governments rushed in bailouts, and ordinary people's deposits nearly went down the drain. At that very moment, a person (or a group) calling himself Satoshi Nakamoto was writing a white paper titled: "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System."

Before Bitcoin, every exchange of value relied on a middleman — banks guaranteeing transfers, Alipay escrowing payments, real-estate agents verifying titles. These middlemen exist because we don't trust each other. You need an authority to keep the books, to confirm "this money really did move from his account to yours."

Trust has a cost. Banks charge fees, cross-border remittances take days, and some countries' currencies can lose half their value overnight. And more importantly: the middleman itself can fail — Lehman Brothers is the example.

Satoshi asked a question: what if we didn't need a middleman? What if we let everyone keep the books at once, so that to tamper, you'd have to deceive everyone simultaneously?

That is what blockchain sets out to do.

Blockchain was never meant for speculating on coins — it's a whole new answer to the ancient problem of "trust."

What makes blockchain force people to "be honest"?

Picture this: 50 students in a class, each holding an identical ledger. Every transaction — Zhang San sends Li Si 10 yuan — gets recorded by all 50 at once. If someone wants to secretly change their own balance from 10 to 100, they'd have to alter the ledgers of more than half the class simultaneously.

In a global network of tens of thousands of computers, that's nearly impossible. This isn't a moral constraint — it's a mathematical one. The cost of cheating far exceeds the gain from honest bookkeeping.

Technically, this is called a distributed ledger: no central server, all nodes equal; a consensus mechanism: everyone together decides which transaction is valid; cryptography: math guarantees signatures are real and history can't be altered.

Put those three together and you get blockchain. At its core it's a "trust machine" — letting a group of strangers who don't know each other exchange value safely, with no authority vouching for them.

So what role does cryptocurrency play in this system?

A blockchain network needs economic incentives to sustain itself. Who keeps the books? Why would they bother? Bitcoin's answer: those who keep the books earn Bitcoin as a reward.

It's like a highway that needs tolls for maintenance, and Bitcoin is the "toll" on this blockchain highway. Everyone who helps maintain the network (miners or validators) trades computing power for crypto assets. Without this incentive, a public chain can't self-organize or self-run.

So cryptocurrency isn't the whole of blockchain — but it's the indispensable blood of a public chain. Many people hear "coin" and think speculation and bubbles, but they miss the point: the coin exists so a decentralized network can keep running, not so you can get rich overnight.

How does Web3 relate to the two?

Web1 was the "read-only" era — you could only view pages, not interact. Web2 was the "read-write" era — you could post on Weibo, upload videos, write comments, but your data belonged to the platforms. Every photo you posted, every word you wrote, created value for Facebook and WeChat, while your only return was "free use."

Web3 is the "read-write-own" era. Your identity is a wallet address, not a phone number. Your creations become on-chain digital assets, not a record on some server. You can carry your social graph and your data from one app to another — platforms can no longer lock you in.

The foundation of Web3 is blockchain (providing trust infrastructure), its fuel is cryptocurrency (providing economic incentive), and its soul is decentralization (returning power from platforms to individuals).

It isn't a perfect solution, and it won't necessarily replace the existing financial system wholesale. But it represents a new direction: when you trust no one, you can at least trust math.
